Researchers at Birmingham University have developed a hydrocolloid that helps in weight-loss. The solution gels in the stomach, as a result you feel fuller and the appetite is curbed.
According to Dr. Fotis Spyropulos, one of the researchers,
“The idea is to make you feel fuller for longer, thereby suppressing the yearning to eat between meals. We now have to work on just how long that suppressant should last. Should the effects be timed to wear off five or six hours from breakfast, or two or three hours from being consumed as a mid-morning drink?”
Further challenges faced by the research team are :
* The hydrocolloid gel should weaken gradually, so that it passes down the digestive tract, and appetite returns.
* The appetite reducing gel should release energy slowly. When our stomach is full, our brain expects an energy reward.
* Flavouring the drink/gel. It has not been decided yet. It has to taste good, or the customers will not purchase the product.
The gel works soon after it comes in contact with acids in the stomach. It uses polymers naturally found in many foods like starch in bread.
